This second revised and updated edition of the ECD directory is the product of a cooperative effort in which the Early Childhood Development Resource Centre (ECDRC) at the BRAC University Institutes of Educational Development (BU-IED) took the lead role. The process of updating required collection and verification of information from Organisation and institutions engaged in ECD activities in Bangladesh. All of them made it possible to compile this directory by taking the time and making the effort to provide necessary information. The extensive network of BRAC Education Programme (BEP) helped the ECD Network Secretariat to follow up with respondents where necessary. BEP’s help is gratefully acknowledged.

The need for attention to the early childhood period in the total effort to improve quality of education at all levels is well recognized. Investments in early leaning and stimulation pay dividends in the short-term and the long-term, if children receive necessary care and stimulation and are better prepared for school. Furthermore, parenting and early childhood education may provide unique leverage to achieve reforms of the education system.

BRAC University Institute of Educational Development (BU-IED) and PLAN Bangladesh have cooperated in establishing Early Childhood Development Resource Centre (ECDRC) at BU-IED. This partnership has helped BU-IED to enhance its professional capacity in the field of early childhood development. ECDRC has been designated by the ECD Network as its secretariat.

An ECD Website (www.ecd-bangladesh.net) is a major vehicle of sharing information among the ECD network members and a complement to this Directory. The Directory is also planned to be posted on the website and updated electronically.

All of our efforts will be rewarded if the database serves its purpose of promoting ECD activities in Bangladesh through the dissemination of information contained in this Directory. Your advice about improving the value and usefulness of the content will be highly appreciated.

Chair, ECD Network
Director, BU-IED

Methodology

Bangladesh ECD Network (BEN) started its survey on making this second revised directory in 2006. As before, the directory intends to compile a list of all the organisations carrying out ECD activities within the country. The first directory developed by UNICEF, Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Save the Children USA was launched in September 2005.

Questionnaire Revision & Development:

The questionnaire used in the first version of ECD directory has been revised by a secretariat team and used in the second version. Prior to disseminating this revised version of the questionnaire announcements were made in some national newspapers. This information was also made accessible on BEN website.

Dissemination of the Questionnaire:
The questionnaire was initially distributed to all the organisations enlisted in the previous directory. Along with recently emerging organisations involved in ECD activities, other interested organisations collected the questionnaire from secretariat and BEN website as well.

Data Collections:

An enormous volume of response came from different corners of Bangladesh. It was a difficult task to locate organisations and verify that they actually carry out ECD activities.

• An ECD-panel was formed and assigned to identify the authenticity of organisations from the respondents through telephonic conversation with the contact person to ensure their involvement in ECD activities.

• All the respondent organisations were categorized into two categories as implementing organisation and institutions.

• The team then preliminarily selected 200 organisations from the list of respondents and began updating the information.

• Emails were sent and phone calls were made to gather information.

• After compiling information provided, a structured profile was created and sent to respective organisations in order to be cross -checked by them.

• BRAC Education Programme helped to check little-known organisations’ activities in the districts.

• Finally 191 organisations were selected through the above process.

The final product in the present printed form is the outcome of this process of compilation and verification. However, the organisations themselves remain responsible for the authenticity of the information.
